BOWEN THERAPY
Bowen Therapy is a gentle, hands-on technique built around sequences of precise movements with pauses between them, and it is used by practitioners to address a wide range of physical and emotional concerns.
What is Bowen Therapy?
Bowen Therapy uses sets of specific movements, performed in an order suited to your immediate needs, with pauses between sequences that give the body time to process and respond. During these pauses, you remain alone in the treatment room to support this response. The movements are intended to activate the parasympathetic nervous system, which is why sessions often bring on a deep state of relaxation.
What happens during a Bowen Therapy session?
The therapist can focus on a specific issue or address the body as a whole. Rather than directing the body to follow a set command, Bowen Therapy allows it to respond at its own pace and within its own limits, working on the physical, emotional, and spiritual level. A session can last between 10 and 120 minutes depending on the issue being addressed, and the first meeting includes a case history of 20 to 60 minutes to establish your needs and expectations.
How many Bowen Therapy sessions are needed?
Many clients notice results after the first session, with effects continuing to develop over the following days. Acute conditions often need only a few sessions, chronic issues typically need more, and more complex conditions may involve protocols of up to 18 to 30 sessions. A pause of 5 to 10 days between sessions is recommended, with 7 days considered optimal.
What should you avoid before and after Bowen Therapy?
Because Bowen Therapy works by prompting a response from the body, it is recommended to avoid massage, bioenergetic treatments, Scottish showers, cold or hot showers, and surgeries for 4 days before and 5 days after a session, since these may interfere with the treatment's effect.
What conditions do people use Bowen Therapy for?
Practitioners commonly use Bowen Therapy for muscle, bone, and joint concerns such as frozen shoulder, knee and hip issues, sprains, back pain, sciatica, and restricted neck movement, as well as for stress, chronic fatigue, and general emotional imbalance. Bowen Therapy is not a substitute for medical diagnosis or treatment, and clients with more complex or chronic health conditions should also consult their doctor.
